The 3rd annual University Research Day is set for April 19, 2018, and the deadline for submissions is January 26, 2018. It is a campus-wide event, meant to bring students and faculty out of their classrooms and labs to share their work and learn about the breadth of scholarly endeavors taking place beyond their own areas of study.
Interested? We have 3 reasons why you might want to consider participating in this upcoming Research Day:
Practice your public speaking – everyone has some degree of anxiety when speaking to large groups. But, the more you practice your public speaking, the less anxious you can become about it. And what a better way to start practicing with a topic that you already know by heart: your own research/project! All this practicing will sure give you the confidence boost to help you develop this critical skill, which will be useful in future settings (whether in the classroom, on the job, or elsewhere!).
Become a subject-matter expert – as you work on your research/project, you are learning the ins and outs of the topic you are studying. The next step would be to practice sharing what you learned with others, in hopes that you contribute to the field at large. Research Day is a good opportunity to practice showcasing your research/project. This practice will pay off when it’s time to market your expertise on graduate school and/or job applications (i.e., on resumes/CVs, personal statements/cover letters, and interviews)!
Get involved in a university tradition – there are so many events (e.g., Mass of Holy Spirit/”No Class, Go to Mass!”, Fall Fiesta, MLK Day of Service, Relay for Life, Luaupalooza) during the year that makes going to Catholic University a truly unique experience. Research Day is that day of the year when the CatholicU community comes together to celebrate intellectual curiosity across the various disciplines. Join your peers, returning alumni, and visiting employers for this growing tradition. So, submit an abstract of your research/project and share with the community your hard work! [Remember: deadline for submissions is January 26, 2018.]
